West Bay Lookin East

West Bay at launch looking SE. Yes that is a paraglider at 600asl.It's The Coach flying Cape Sharp at West Bay

Description of Launch:
HG & PG - Groomed launch and set up area. Launch is 60' asl and is the saddle at the west end of the bay between much higher cliffs. The resultant venturi exaggerates typical wind strength. The bowel shape does not allow for accurate wind direction indication. (See endnote) The land owner appreciates politeness.

Description of LZ:
Beach. Caution - Extreme tidal range. (See endnote). Top landing is very easy here.

Vehicle / Transportation Requirements:
Street vehicle drive up. Please keep drivewayclear for the cottage owners and whatever you do do not drive on the manicured lawns of the locals!

HPAC Skill Level Requirements:
Student, Novice, Intermediate or Advanced               Mild Conditions: Student, Novice
Skill Level Verification Requirements:
Student, Novice, Intermediate or Advanced

HPAC Rating: Novice

Site Regulation:..Informal    HPAC Insurance,    Local Club Waiver

Other Information:
It is extremely important that a pilot unfamiliar with this site a) check with the local club and b) ascertain true wind direction before launching. You will pass Partridge Island beach before you get to launch and a more accurate assessment of wind direction can be obtained there.

If the wind direction shifts into the south there is a danger of leeside rotor at launch, behind Cape Sharp and that can happen here very quickly.

NB. The Bay of Fundy exhibits a phenomenal tidal range. At certain phases of the moon the high tide can reach the base of the cliffs. Low tide is equally exaggerated.. SE winds have a nasty habit of being short lived before they shift into the SW.

CAPE CHIGNECTO

Cape Chignecto looking W
The beginning of the Cape Chignecto ridge. The launch is up the bank to the right and the sled run lz is on this beach.

Type of Site:....This site consists of a 12 kilometer coastal ridge which conforms to the shape of a very large and sweeping Bay. Only the eastern most portion of the ridge has been flow (3 Km) due to the curvature of the ridge and the predominant SW wind. The ridge climbs to 350' a quarter mile west of launch. and to 600" further out towards the Cape

Type of Flying:
Ridge:Yes, Thermal: unlikely, Coastal Convergence: Possible
XC Potential:....Good (out and back or straight run out)

Description of Launch:
Cliff. PG - Groomed launch and set up area.
Cliff HG - 500' east of PG launch. In development

Description of LZ:
Beach. Caution - Extreme tidal range. (See endnote)

Vehicle / Transportation Requirements:
Any Vehicle. Access to launch for HG is possible with permission of Park staff.

HPAC Skill Level Requirements:

Mild Conditions: Student(with instructor), Novice

Skill Level Verification Requirements:
Student(with instructor), Novice, Intermediate or Advanced

HPAC Rating: Novice

Site Regulation:..Informal    HPAC Insurance,    Local Club Waiver

Other Information:
This site has been flown quite extensively. It is within the boundaries of the recently (97) established Cape Chignecto Provincial Park. The will of the park governors to allow continued use of the park for HG and PG is positive although entrenched guidelines are only now being developed (99). It is very important that any pilot flying this beautiful ridge do so only with the understanding that the entrenched use of this site depends on the responsible flying of all of us ! We don=t want to lose this one.!

NB. The Bay of Fundy exhibits a phenomenal tidal range. At certain phases of the moon the high tide can reach the base of the cliffs. Low tide is equally exaggerated.. SE winds have a nasty habit of being short lived before they shift into the SW.

The short lived SE wind makes the long ridge on the NW side of the Bay difficult to fly. The intertidal zone on this side is also very narrow. It is recommended that only pilots very experienced in coastal flying attempt this ridge.

ECONOMY MOUNTAIN

Elevation: Launch 600' asl.

Direction of Launch: E

Site Suitable for: HG & PG

Location: Central Economy. 20k east of Parrsboro on Hwy 2
View from launch facing East and overlooking the Minas Basin at the upper end of the Bay of Fundy.
This is high tide. At low tide it is difficult to see water.

Regulating Body: HPAAC

PG: Brian Wheaton........Tel. 902 254-2583
HG:

Flying Season: Assign value: 0,1,2,3 0r 4 (highest)     Spring 3........Summer 4........Fall 3.......Winter 2

Type of Site:....Hill    Type of Flying: Ridge: Yes........Thermal: Yes,   XC Potential:.... Yes

Description of Launch:
Launch is a 60' wide  and extends back 100+'. The front drops off very quickly making a run off difficult.

Description of LZ:
The PG bailout LZ here is very small and also it is slightly down hill. It is directly in front of launch. It is no good for hang gliders. The hang gliders must land beyond the road and then beyond the first large field and in the second field behind the row of bushes marking the property line.

Hang gliders can easily make this field but paragliders cannot unless conditions are very good. Otherwise pgs must land in the small lz at the base of the mountain.

Please take note if the lz is in crop do not land there. There are probably alternatives.

Power lines

Vehicle / Transportation Requirements:
This site is a walk up from the east side.

HPAC Skill Level Requirements:

Site Regulation:..Informal    HPAC Insurance,    Local Club Waiver

Other Information:
This site offers great potential. On light clear days with a very light westerly flow convergence is likely by midmorning above this east facing site. Top landing is a no go for Hg.
